What is 'Hobby Ceramics'?

Hobby Ceramics was originally an American concept dating back some 90 years, introducing the general public to the unique craft of creating versatile, individual and beautiful real Ceramics, rather than the brown lumpy items so often produced at conventional "Pottery Classes"

What draws people to Hobby Ceramics is that anyone can do it...with a little help!  Creating pieces that compare with, if not shame, the ceramics they already have at home. No prior experience of clay, pottery or artistry is required, or necessary.

Stage 1:  The Mould

'Slip' is poured into a plaster mould and left a while for the water from the slip to absorb into the plaster, forming a layer of clay on the inside surface of the mould. The excess slip is then poured out and the clay is allowed to dry.

Stage 2:  Bisque

After a few hours the mould can be dismantled and the clay shape (or Greenware) is removed. The greenware is then left to dry and the visible seam lines are removed, called fettling.
It is then fired in a kiln to well over 1000 degrees Celsius. This results in a hard, strong, porous piece which is referred to as 'Bisque'.

Stage 3:  Decoration... (This is where YOU come in!)

At this stage the bisque can, be 'stained' with colours that require no further firing (For mainly decorative purposes only )

At Under the Sun however, we specialise in finishing with special colours and glazes that need to be fired in the kiln to achieve the rich and glossy, real ceramic look we are so familiar with.

You have the choice of many different bisque pieces in stock, or you can order specific pieces which usually arrive the day after the order has been processed.

These pieces are ready for you to decorate however you wish with all the colours and glazes under the sun!
